The 2-Night Getaway (Friday–Sunday)
Friday Afternoon
Arrive by 3–4 PM. Check into your cabin. If energy allows, drive 5 minutes to Rockbridge State Nature Preserve for the 2.75-mile trail to Ohio's largest natural bridge. The late-afternoon light through the ravine is worth the effort. No pets at the preserve.
Evening: Hot tub. Stars. No cell service means no distractions. If you need supplies, Logan is 20 minutes north with grocery stores and restaurants.
Saturday — Trail Day
Morning (8 AM start): Hit Conkle's Hollow rim trail first — it's 5 minutes from Rockbridge and the rim trail is one of Ohio's most dramatic hikes (2.0–2.5 mi, strenuous, 200-foot cliff edges). No pets. Get there early before the lot fills.
Late morning: Drive 10 minutes to Rock House — Ohio's only true cave, with 200 CCC-carved stone stairs and seven natural windows. Dogs welcome here.
Afternoon: Head to Old Man's Cave (15 min). Crowds thin significantly after 3 PM. Do the 1.5-mile loop through Upper Falls, Devil's Bathtub, and the recess cave.
Evening: Dinner in Logan or cook at the cabin. The Hocking Hills Lodge restaurant is solid if you want to eat out.
Sunday Morning
Sleep in. Coffee on the porch. Before checkout, drive 15 minutes south to Ash Cave — the easiest and most rewarding quick hike in the park. The 0.25-mile paved trail reaches Ohio's largest recess cave (700 ft wide, 100 ft deep). Wheelchair accessible. Then head home via US-33 North.
The 3-Night Deep Dive (Thursday–Sunday)
Thursday
Arrive early enough to hike Rockbridge Preserve in the afternoon. Thursday is still weekday pricing at most cabins — you'll save 40–75% vs. the weekend rate.
Friday
Conkle's Hollow and Rock House in the morning (see Saturday plan above). Afternoon: explore Hocking State Forest — 9,815 acres with 59 miles of trails, plus Ohio's only designated rock-climbing/rappelling area. Trail details at HockingHikes.com.
Saturday
Old Man's Cave → Cedar Falls → Ash Cave via the Grandma Gatewood Trail — a 6-mile one-way point-to-point hike. You'll need to arrange a car shuttle or out-and-back from Old Man's Cave. This is the signature hike of Hocking Hills.
Evening: If it's a clear Friday or Saturday night between March and November, drive to the John Glenn Astronomy Park (free, register at registration.jgap.org) for guided stargazing with a 28-inch telescope. Hocking Hills has some of Ohio's darkest skies.
Sunday
Slow morning. If you haven't done Cantwell Cliffs yet (20 min from Rockbridge), it's the least crowded of all seven areas and a fittingly dramatic finale — Fat Woman's Squeeze, 150-foot gorge walls, full solitude.
